JodieBowie: How I Got Into Being A Promoter (My Journey) – Part 1

I may have break this up into different blogs otherwise people will be reading it FOREVER!! Believe it or not, my journey to where I am now in my music career wasn’t a straight line at all… to be honest, this wasn’t even the route I was planning on going down.

All The Best Decisions Happen By Accident

JodieBowie circa 2015

I think this is a good place to start.
It got to that time in school when you’ve either almost completed Sixth Form or College and you have to start considering what your next step is… further education, like University, perhaps an Apprenticeship, or are you going to find a job?

Well, I already did an extra year of Sixth Form because they just couldn’t get me to leave! So I stayed until Year 13, I think I was 19. I took Photography, Media and English Language as my A Levels.

Music was always something that fired up my soul more than anything else. It was all I thought about, all I was interested in and all I could really write about! For my last Photography Coursework my work was based purely on how to photograph bands. My media exam piece was based on The Rolling Stones. If I could include bands and music in my education… then I would!
My Tutor Mr. Mabert would actually set me extra work to do outside of school; he knew how passionate I was about rock music. I can remember walking down the corridor one morning wearing a retro crop top, paisley flares, red lipstick and Doc Martens and Mr. Mabert said “Jodie, what year is this?” and I said “1975 sir“. He knew I was good at writing, and he would encourage me to write about my favourite musicians etc and would read and give feedback on what I had written.

My winning billboard – 2014

To be fair, at this point I should probably add that I was doing pretty good at photography and actually won a world wide competition judged by renowned photographer Rankin, with a reconstructive photograph of myself as Mick Jagger from a photo that David Bailey took back in the 60’s.
I was also pretty well known on the Tribute Band scene because I absolutely loved David Bowie & The Rolling Stones so would be out regularly watching tributes to those artists and meeting people through those sort of avenues. I mean I had bright purple hair and wore a feather boa… I wasn’t exactly hard to miss.

This can probably lead on to how I got my name actually – JodieBowie.
At the age of 15 I discovered a man named David Bowie; and I thought he was Gods gift on earth! There was a boy in my year… I can’t remember his name, but I think it was Jacob? and for some reason I thought he looked exactly like David Bowie from Labyrinth (even though he had short black hair! But they did have the same teeth to be fair). Me and my friends would use the code name “Bowie” to talk about him. Of course this ‘Bowie’ never looked at me twice, let alone knew my name! I was a flat chested, goofy, boyish, awkward girl with a hair cut like Brett Anderson from Suede – not exactly what boys of 15 find ‘attractive’ aha. ANYWAY, because of my Bowie obsession a lot of my teachers started calling me JodieBowie and this followed me into Sixth Form.
Mr. Mabert, Mr. Presnell and Ms. Green were all teachers who’d call me Miss. Bowie.
So when it came to starting up my blog, I decided to go with “JodieBowie” and from then on it’s kind of stuck. I decided to use it also as my promoter name because so many people knew me as that. I’m sure I’ll get sued one day for copyright!

Me with Bobby T of TooRex at my first ‘job’ at the Memorial Centre

SO, I’m at Sixth Form at that annoying cross roads in life where you have to decide which way you’re going to do. At this point they’d already done me a favour letting me stay an extra year, so by this time they were desperate for me to spread my wings. I decided to just go along with what everyone else wanted me to do and what everyone else was doing. I’ll apply for University.
I thought seeing as I love music and writing… the obvious course to follow would be Music Journalism.

In order to get some practice within the industry I needed to actually try doing some journalistic things.
I saw my local centre – New Milton Memorial Centre – was doing a lot of Tribute Nights, so I popped in one afternoon and asked if they’d like someone to write press releases for the local paper to help promote the shows.
This decision literally changed my life
.

They said YES, and the next thing I knew I was working with bands, learning about what actually goes on behind the scenes and doing all the writing I was supposed to be doing. A few months later, one afternoon they called me in for a meeting because they wondered if I had any ideas on how to get younger people in; and that’s when I thought “what about local band nights?“. I saw that Mr. Kyps in Bournemouth (at the time) had a few band nights which featured all the best of Bournemouth’s local music scene, so I thought why not just bring that line-up down my way and maybe add some other bands that I knew personally from other areas like Southampton.
I was basically just left to make this idea a reality, and I DID.

My first ever line-up!

This was when “ROCK NIGHTS” were born. They were originally called ‘Heavy Rock Nights’ but we decided to rebrand just in case the ‘heavy’ put people off.
My very first line up took place Friday 13th February 2015. At this point in time I knew of Western Sand as Tyler Hains and Jimmy Bradshaw were actually my guitar tutors from when I was about 14 years old, so I knew they’d make an excellent headline band. I was familiar with The Smokin’ Prophets from their Hollywood Trash days where I saw them support Alan Merrill at the old Talking Heads in Southampton, and they were up for jumping on my show. I heard that Saints of Sin were pretty big around Bournemouth at the time as well and had seen them on many line-ups with both bands, so I got in touch with those guys and that was it… that was my first line-up!

Honestly, compared to what I do now, I had no idea what I was doing. I somehow winged it, into getting the bands involved and probably got lucky through them just knowing me anyway, then it was the case of actually making sure people knew about it! I was still at Sixth Form at this time, so I would go out every Friday during my break and lunch and hand out flyers around my town, stick them everywhere I can. I’d spam all the Facebay groups in my area too in the hope someone would see it and share it. I learnt how to use the ticketing service EventBrite and that made life a whole lot easier.

I can’t remember if the night was particularly financially successful (at this point, I didn’t do any of the ‘money’ part of bookings, nor did I make anything from it), but there was people there and everyone was having a fantastic show and loved all the bands! So with that being said, it was time for round 2!
Originally I kept the same line-up, but Western Sand couldn’t make the second show which meant I had to do some researching a find another band!
This is when I came across a band called ‘Pirates of Panama’ who seemed to be doing not too badly in Bournemouth and when I listened to their music, I liked it. This was another unforeseen moment that would change my life again.

My second line-up consisted of headliners Saints of Sin (and these were the first of many many shows together) and support acts Pirates of Panama and The Smokin’ Prophets. The show took place on Friday 31st July and needed some proper pushing, and the show almost got pulled! But somehow we made it work within the space of 3 days with some proper hard work and it went down an actual storm. The connection I had formed with the bands were unbreakable, people were beginning to recognise me a little bit, I was getting spoken to differently, I was behaving differently, my music taste had changed, I wasn’t listening to 70’s bands, it was all about the 80’s. I was having the time of my life, 19 years old and living the life you dream of when you’re watching Rock of Ages on TV.
This was the moment that I realised I wanted to be doing this forever.

Going to University to study journalism seemed like a lifetime ago, and was no longer an ambition of mine. I wanted to give my entire life, and my whole self to bands and doing and being what they needed me to be and do.
That hasn’t changed since that day.
I began really looking into bands in the area, adding members of bands on Facebook and making that contact. It didn’t take long before I was getting invited to gigs, being put on guestlists (which I still don’t like – I will always pay for a ticket, sometimes even to my own shows!), and bands were introducing themselves to me. I was having a great time going to gigs, mainly Saints of Sin gigs, meeting fans, living my life, discovering new music, figuring out how the industry works and just getting a taste for how many bands are actually out there!

I did a further 2 Rock Nights in 2016 which included 4 bands on the line-up. I worked with Saints of Sin, The Brash Bullets, Lip Service, Pirates of Panama, Daisy Chains, The Smokin’ Prophets, Our Propaganda and Freeway Mad.
Some members of said bands are now members of South of Salem, Crooked Shapes and The Treatment. Both gigs were fantastic line-ups and did fairly well to be honest, especially for the size of the venue I was working with, but the people who ran the Centre weren’t really up for following my dreams of bringing rock ‘n’ roll to a sleepy town of pensioners…

A little glimpse of what is coming in PART 2!

So, that’s where the rock ‘n’ roll dream took a break for a while. I grew tired of not being heard or encouraged and decided that it was better to be at gigs than it was to put on gigs. Everyone around me was convinced that music just wasn’t a ‘thing’ anymore, and no matter how hard I tried to prove them wrong, they just weren’t interested in helping me get to the next level, so I guess I got tired of my flame being blown out and took a step back.

BUT… that would soon change!
And you will hear about what happened next in PART 2!! ❤

I hope this wasn’t too long winded, but there’s so much life to pack into something like a blog! I might as well write a book or a movie haha.
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed! Feel free to ask questions… do you thang! 😀

Gigs Coming Up On The SOUTH COAST You Should ATTEND

SO! Gigs are potentially going to be a thing again!! HALLELUJAH!!! Some are of course still going to be socially distanced and restricted… but some could be genuinely normal! To celebrate the occasison I’m listing a few gigs I think you should attend in the South Coast area (Bournemouth/Southampton) that are coming up in 2021.

Most of these events are New Wave of Classic Rock Bands, and they mostly take place in Southampton!
Tickets to all the events are listed under each event – just click on the blue link 🙂

Friday 21st May
This show just so happens to be the re-opening of The 1865 in Southampton, as it’ll be the first gig that takes place after the Lockdown 3.0! So that’s reason enough to come down and support live music and music venues… BUT… not only is it a re-opening show, it is a Stop, Stop! show, with support from Spyder Byte! Stop, Stop! also have an album coming out 1st May, so this’ll be a chance to catch some of the songs in the flesh, fresh off the CD press.
Tickets

KING CREATURE (The 1865)
Sunday 23rd May
If you like your heavier rock and metal, then this is a gig you’re going to want to get yourself to! It is of course another social distanced show, but that isn’t an issue with bands of this calibre on the bill.
Tickets

GIN ANNIE (The 1865)

Gin Annie are headlining a Rock Night down at The 1865 in Southampton – with support from some pretty sweet bands, Gallows Circus and Crooked Shapes. That’s one tasty NWOCR line-up if you ask me! I’d grab some tickets while there is still some hanging about 😉
Tickets

SKINNY KNOWLEDGE (Canvas)
Friday 9th July
This will be the bands debut live show! So that is already one heck of a reason to get yourself down to Canvas in Bournemouth – I’m also going to assume it’ll be their album launch show too, so it is practically two-in-one. I believe Black Tree Vultures are the support band, and this will be the perfect time to catch their new line-up.

Another exciting treat for those who live their New Wave of Classic Rock! The one and only Massive Wagons are coming to Southampton on their ‘House of Noise’ tour, and their support is no other than an equally awesome band… The Lazy’s! I cannot express enough how awesome this show is going to be. It is going to blow your mind!

This awesome band was formed in 2015 by Greg Hart and Steevi Bacon. If you like your rock and power pop, then this band will be one for you. They’ve supported bands such as The Sweet, Bonnie Tyler & Status Quo as well as being added to the BST Hyde Park Phil Collins line-up in 2017.

Nathan’s vocals are absolutely stunning and will blow your mind every single time.

Bands That Have Helped My Mental Health Recently (Bands I Run To)

I thought I’d share some positivity in the form of music! Here are some of the bands that keep my spirit lifted when I’m not feeling the best. Maybe they’ll help boost your mood too!

These are the bands 10 times out of 10 I’ll have blasting through my ears when I’m on my run/walk around town 3-4 times a day!

It’s funny isn’t it… if you think about it… music is actually super personal! You can learn a lot about an individual by the music they listen to. I never used to think too much about it, but writing this now, I think it’s quite exciting to learn about people via the means of music!

The Struts
Who doesn’t like The Struts? One day I’ll have as much confidence as Luke Spiller, and maybe one day I’ll even look like him… that’s the friggin’ goal. He’s one gorgeous talented creature that is for sure. Right, let’s stop gawping.
The Struts have so many feel good songs, I honestly can’t help but throw some moves to them. They make my heart beat faster, get my adrenaline pumping, they unlock that little box that has all my serotonin and dopamine kept in it and it comes flooding out when I listen to these guys. This band makes me feel so damn SEXY. I could be strutting down the street, greasy hair up in a ponytail, stale perfume, no makeup… and I’d still feel like the most confident badass in the world – capable of achieving my dreams and grabbing them with both hands. They made me realise that I deserve better, and I am the only people in this world that can give that to myself.
The best thing about this band is that it really doesn’t matter whether you are stone cold sober or completely rat arse drunk… they still sound out of this world and give you the feeling of an orgasm. Can you tell I really like this band yet?
TOP 3 SONGS:
Put Your Money On Me
Primadonna Like Me
Dirty Sexy Money

Kris Barras
Barras is usually on an absolute constant repeat. First thing in the morning, the second my eyes open… reach for the Spotify app… play Kris Barras. SORTED. I’m not sure what it is, but Kris Barras always manages to get me pumped and ready for the day – especially when I used to have to get up for work. I can listen to Kris play guitar all day, I’m always utterly mesmerised when I see him play live. His songs have such attitude, and we know I’m a sucker for anything with proper hearty punchy riffs, and that is exactly what he offers. He is also such a wonderful lyricist and it is a delight to hear him sing. Kris Barras is very talented and I genuinely enjoy just chilling out and embracing that talent. However, I find when I’m out on my walk or run (no matter what time of day) his songs are so motivating and I always come back home with a little more fire in my belly, and a lot more belief in myself. There isn’t a single mood where I won’t listen to Kris Barras – his music has comforted me when I am sad, and it’s also brought me joy when I’m happy. If you’ve ever seen me about town, speed walking around with my headphones in and I’m totally in my own little world and zoned out…. I will definitely be rocking out to Kris Barras. Good luck trying to get my attention when his music is playing!

I’m Gone

Steel Panther
If you really really really love me… then you’ll listen to Steel Panther with me. You know, sometimes… the only thing you really really need is… STEEL PANTHER! If I’ve got a bit of a grump on, or I feel like I can take on the entire universe and win, then these are the boys I’m blasting through my earholes. They help me to remember what life was like outside of a pandemic and help to remind me that there is so much life outside of the town I live in. I love the fact that they write all lyrics so many people are too scared to put into a song, and it isn’t rap music… it’s 80’s hair metal! YES QUEENS!!
This band really unleash my inner lioness. I feel the need to backcomb my hair, pull on my ripped leggins and try to lick everything in sight. As the saying goes “you don’t know the real Jodie till you’ve seen her dance to Steel Panther“, and it is so true! Steel Panther are my F*CK YOU band, they help get rid of all that built up negativity I keep locked away deep inside but they also fill me right up to the brim with confidence and give me an ego boost so if anyone was to come up to me and decide to be a bit of a dick, it wouldn’t be their best decision.
TOP 3 SONGS:
17 Girls In A Row
If You Really Really Love Me
Tiger Woods

Paul Weller
Even though this guy is the definition of a musical genius, I seem to gravitate to him most in my lowest of moods. Maybe the emotions hit differently or something. He just seems to know how to heal open wounds, with his smooth like chocolate vocals, and his genuine genius lyrics partnered with the most gorgeous guitar tunes you could ever dream of. When I’m in a hole that is basically drowning in sadness and I’m sinking very quickly into a depression or fit of anxiety, I always go to Weller. I love his music all the time, he is a God like genius; but when I’m out on my walks and I’m feeling incredibly alone and have a lot of sad emotions I haven’t quite got out my system yet, I’ll have Weller in my ears. I’ll completely zone out and switch off from the outside world and immerse myself in his music, remembering a really beautiful period of my life and I always seem to imagine myself looking my absolute best, in stiletto heels and a gorgeous sequined dress and I’ll be dancing like I know how to dance and in those moments, life will seem peaceful again. Nothing calms me more than Weller.
TOP 3 SONGS:
Above The Clouds
Out Of The Sinking
Saturns Pattern

The Treatment
You can’t get much more upbeat and motivating than The Treatment. I always stick on The Treatment when I need to kick my arse into action. I have the best job in the entire world… I get to work with rock bands! Every little girls dream right? No? Well it was mine! Being a pretty little princess never appealed to me, I always wanted to be a badass independent rocker. However, sometimes I get stuck in a rut and have little to no motivation… but The Treatment pick me up by my lady bollocks and shout in my face “hey! look! we’re awesome, and so are all the other bands! get up, get dressed, go on that run and organise a damn festival!“. They are a great band to listen to on a run or walk, I’m always singing along out loud – I probably make the locals worry! There is so much power behind them, in the drums, in the vocals and in the guitars. It really does drive you to achieve your goals and to be the absolute best you can be. They demand to be listened to LOUD! I always feel like the rock chick I am after a good head banging session to these guys. Sometimes we need a kick up the butt and a proper look in the mirror to go out there and be proud of who we are!
TOP 3 SONGS:
Let It Begin
Rat Race
Let’s Get Dirty

The Who
A band of my childhood! I have to admit, The Who sound the best in the summer… I’m not sure why I think that, but during the hot weather The Who are my GO TO! I love listening to The Who, I just have a lot of good memories and vibes attached to this band. I get a prop buzz when I get their lyrics right as well… there just isn’t anyone writing songs like they did back in the day. Take me right back to my roots, remind me who I am at heart and that I am clever, passionate and kind of awesome in my own weird way. I gain a swagger in my walk, a spring in my step, a bounce in my hair, a confidence in my personality, I gain some faith in myself again when I rock out to The Who. They’ve been with me through my whole life pretty much, I don’t remember not being a fan of The Who. I am 100% authentic Jodie when I have this band in the background… the innocent, music loving, kind, sweet, passionate little rock ‘n’ roller I always am, ever since childhood. They should know!

JodieBowie : Why New Wave Of Classic Rock Is The BEST Place To Find New MUSIC

There is a fantastic little group on Facebook called New Wave of Classic Rock (NWOCR) and this has been the main place where I have discovered so many fantastic bands that light up my world! Seeing as I’m a promoter working mostly with NWOCR bands, I thought this would be a great opportunity to give this fantastic group a big shout out.

NWOCR is a Facebook group set up by Jeremy Wills, Peter Rattray, Katharina Ils-Kelber, Neil Barrell, Steve Fished and Ian Long and later joined by Gary Spiller and Richard Brindley. The aim of the group is to provide a platform where fans can come together and share photos, videos and recommendations from this great new scene. The timeline for bands to be featured in the group is that they have not released anything before 2010.

NWOCR is such a fantastic community and I am more than glad that I managed to stumble across it.

Back in 2018 I started listening to a lot more ‘local’ music. I was already a promoter but wanted to work with more bands than the ones I knew in my area. One day I was walking into town and my Spotify started churning out these songs by bands I’d never heard of… I headed straight to FB to find out who these bands were and this brought me to The New Wave Of Classic Rock Facebook Group and changed my whole life.

Without NWOCR I wouldn’t have been able to have put on Nozfest.
Nozfest is my very own New Wave of Classic Rock festival which takes place annually at The 1865 in Southampton usually in August. The line-up typically features 9-10 bands and is an all day festival. There will be links listed at the end if you wish to check Nozfest out.

The first few bands I came across where Mason Hill and Massive Wagons, closely followed by Those Damn Crows. These bands absolutely blew my mind! They reminded me so much of bands that I already loved… but they were fresh, exciting and I felt like I was the only one who knew of these bands, which made it even more exciting!

The talent in this group is phenomenal… it is honestly unbeatable. I maintain that I am the luckiest person to have come across the bands I have, and to have met and worked with them – life goal completed.

It is the most supportive community I have seen. No one judges any one, everyone is so passionate about the music they are creating, promoting, sharing, enjoying… I’ve never been to a ‘NWOCR’ gig and felt out of my comfort zone. It’s like one huge family, it really really is. There will always be someone you know in the crowd, and every person there is just living their best life in that moment that the positive energy radiates round the room, it’s incredible!

There will be something for everyone in this group, no matter if you are more into metal than rock. There will definitely be a few bands that tickle your fancy, you may even surprise yourself with what you are drawn to. That is what is so great about discovering new music, you just don’t know what you are going to come across.
If you love anything 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, rock, metal, blues, grunge, pop, punk… there will honestly be a band for you.

There’s absolutely no competition either. Every band supports another and sort of stays in their own lane (if that makes sense), no band is out to copy another. Everyone really ‘knows’ each other… there is just zero negativity, and that is so rare these days. It’s all about music and passion, it’s so refreshing to see so much kindness, respect, support and love, especially for such awesome music. NWOCR isn’t technically a genre… but in my opinion it’s one of the best for music.

I cannot wait for live music to return and to get myself down the front at a live show! I have missed all these bands so much. As great as Spotify and YouTube are… I just NEED to see those beautiful talented humans in the flesh and feel that rock ‘n’ roll vibe you can’t get anywhere else. I’m sure many people are feeling exactly the same, including the bands themselves.

This group is relatively small in terms of todays standard of music, however it is also HUGE. NWOCR is everywhere! It’s in Classic Rock magazine, bands are being played on Planet Rock and some bands are even playing festivals like Download! This just proves that people’s love for rock music will never go away, it is one huge community and has fans from all walks of life. There is still a place in the world for those ‘unconventional’ bands, and they are wanted more than ever. It may be a little harder for them to get their music out to the masses, but by god will it be worth it.

You’ll make new friends and meet so many remarkable people. If you are passionate about music, you’re bound to find a friend for life in this group. The NWOCR is like a second family to me. All my favourite bands are there, so many people are enjoying their music too, there are so many gigs and festivals to attend all year round (in normal times) and no matter where you are you’re bound to see familiar faces. It’s FANTASTIC! The best feeling in the world that.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with so many incredible bands… Massive Wagons, The Treatment, Collateral, Those Damn Crows, Mason Hill, Black Tree Vultures, Wicked Jackals, Stone Broken, Gallows Circus, Kris Barras, Skam, Hollowstar…. ALL THE BANDS!!! You make my heart fill with so much love and happiness you wouldn’t believe.

Lastly I am so so proud of every single band that puts themselves out there, creates fantastic music and is living their dreams. Top 10 Songs by David Bowie

Next in my Top 10 Songs by Bands From My Childhood, we have the mighty David Bowie. You can check out the first blog in this series HERE. Enjoy 😉

189899_101157569967905_100002209864688_8219_842933_n

David Bowie, was my more ‘hard core’ music phase when I was a teen. I started with Marc Bolan when I was 13, then when I reached 15 I thought David Bowie was better, and started moving more towards his music. Never stopped being a fan of the Bowie.

When he died, it actually broke my heart. It still does actually; and I know how bizarre it sounds to genuinely grieve over someone you never met, but waking up to countless text messages all reading “David Bowie has died”… I died inside that day. I booked an appointment at my tattooists immediately, and the next day I was getting the Aladdinsane lightning bolt tattooed on my ribs – thank you Matt.

A few boys I ‘dated’ picked up on the Bowie side of me. One quoted ‘Sorrow’ to ask me on a date. Another did his own rendition of ‘Dancing in the Street’, and sang ‘Ziggy Stardust’ at me in his car, then locked me in until I agreed to meet him for a drink haha – don’t worry, he was harmless. Bowie’s death and music is actually quite personal to me… you’ll be lucky if I ever openly discuss it with you.

There was a boy in my year at school who dyed his hair jet black one year and styled it sort of like Jeff Beck/Ronnie Wood, and it made him look EXACTLY like David Bowie (he had the teeth, the nose, the accent….) – he sat next to me in history class, and I died every time we had to talk. No idea what happened to him?

I dyed my hair bright red when I was 16 which was my homage to Bowie… and it literally stuck until I was 21. I have an intense feeling it will probably make a come back as well. My photography teacher was a massive Bowie fan, so we bonded over that and also I used to write poems and hand them into my English Teacher, I was a proper weirdo.

The ‘JodieBowie‘ name was a thing before his passing. It’s stuck around for over 8 years; everyone referred to me as Bowie throughout my teen years! ❤

Mask - 051

The peek of my Bowie-esque phase.

So, in no particular order….

FAME
“Is it any wonder, I reject you first?”
Watching the video to this just made me think… “damn… am I just attracted to people who remind me of David Bowie?” – I’m not sure how that epiphany happened… but… I think it could be a possibility evolving from my sub-conscious brain.
Anyhow, Fame was a song I over played A LOT. It’s a proper classy song. Nothing more to add.

DIAMOND DOGS
“Hunt you to the ground they will, mannequins with kill appeal”
I felt proper grown up when I went and bought the album from HMV. I was like “yeah, my music tastes have matured.. I’ve moved on from Ziggy, I’m a grown up now”. I was so proud of myself when I learnt the lyrics to this, and could actually sing it without sounding like a cat being strangled.

BLUE JEAN
“Is heaven any sweeter than blue jean”
This is actually my favourite David Bowie song, and the video… perfection. I had a major crush on Bowie in this video. I used to do my makeup like him in this video – I basically had a gold face; but I was loving life and thought I was hot as hell. I would turn up at Sixth Form dressed in the most random of clothes and makeup, and the comment from teachers would be “Oh, Jodie is Bowie today”. Guess that’s where “Jodie Bowie” came from.

CRACKED ACTOR
“Suck baby suck, gimme your hand”
My Dad set up a mic stand for me in my bedroom, and I’d come home and whack on my snake skin thigh high heeled boots and sing this in the mirror. I was the coolest cat around believe me. I was indeed single till I was 21… this was probably why – I was too busy being a dude myself 😉 (to be fair… I still am :’) )

SONG FOR BOB DYLAN
“Now hear this Robert Zimmerman…”
Hunky Dory is my favourite Bowie album – it is absolute genius. I’ve chosen this one out of all the other classics because I feel like not many non-Bowie fans have heard it. I just think it’s a really clever song, it’s so soft and cute… it’s lovely.

THE NEXT DAY
“Here I am, not quite dying, my body left to rot in a hollow tree…”
I remember when the video for this came out. Man did it cause a fuss! Also no one had actually seen Bowie for years, so it was like his first ‘I’m back’ video. There’s prostitutes, priests, nuns, sadists…. and himself as God/Jesus of course.

HEREOS
“Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim”
How could I not include this? Although, I am including this because it’s mine and my Dads song. I’m sure this is a personal fave for so many people out there. It is very over-played these days, I’d love to see some more less classic Bowie tunes being covered.

MODERN LOVE
“I don’t believe in modern love”
This was my little teeny love song when I was at school. There was a boy in my history class, who looked EXACTLY like David Bowie – mate, I would fan girl so damn hard, I was genuinely a melted heap on the floor whenever he acknowledged me; in fact all my friends called him ‘Bowie‘ as a codename. We were partners in P.E as well – that wasn’t embarrassing at all *face palm*. Have to admit, my taste in men hasn’t changed one bit….. but luckily I can just about refrain from peeing myself when I see someone I fancy; I just fall off chairs, snort, and spill my drinks now ahaha!

GOLDEN YEARS
“Nothings going to touch you in these golden years”
Bowie was truly at his finest and absolute coolest when he was the Thin White Duke ❤ That man….. DAMN. Gotta love me a Thin White Duke! So many people love Ziggy because he is just such an iconic character of the 70’s, but The Duke was a genius even if he was taken over by cocaine.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL SUICIDE
“Gimme your hands… cos you’re wonderful”
I cry every time at this song. This song was Bowie killing off Ziggy Stardust to become a new persona/alter-ego (Halloween Jack). However, it hits home just a little bit more following his death. This song also saved my life many many times, when I was battling deep and dark thoughts… “Oh no love, you’re not alone!”… and I never will be alone.
Was a track I turned to a lot when I went through self-harm.

david-bowie-1100

Bowie is an absolute icon, and I’m sure he’s going to stay as a very important figure in my life for the rest of my time here on Earth too. We even have the lightning bolt featured on the Nozfest logo… he really is included in all aspects of my life.
To meet someone who feels the same feelings about Bowie, would be an absolute dream come true. Imagine just chilling to some pure genius, bottle of wine, the sound of vinyl crackling… and to be in proper decent company….. one can dream.

P.S Please say “ashes to ashes, fun to funky” at my eventual funeral.

I hope you enjoyed delving through my love of David Bowie. I think Bowie is very personal and sacred to quite a few people out there… and I’m sure he’s touched every musicians life at some point. Miss you my love ❤

Top 10 Songs by Marc Bolan & T.Rex

I am thinking of making this a little series actually. I’ve recently been listening to the Bolan again, and thought doing a Top 10 T.Rex seemed like a fun little idea. Marc Bolan was literally my teen phase… I was a right little glam rocker from the ages of 13 – 17. Let’s have a look shall we…. dive into my childhood!

Marc Bolan & T Rex File Photos

Little fun fact for you guys, I used to attend “Clive’s Rock School” and one year we got a float at the Milford on Sea carnival….. and I dressed up as Marc Bolan.. yes I did! I must have been about 14 years old, but I was freaking awesome!
Also, I can put my hand safely on my heart and say that I am no singer; however, I did teach myself how to sing like Marc Bolan, and still to this day when a T.Rex song is played that natural vibrato comes back… like reawakening a hidden accent. The first song I ever learnt to play on guitar was “Cosmic Dancer” and I learnt that myself, sat listening to a record… didn’t google the chords or nothing. I’m not a musician, but that is a little proud moment for myself 🙂
I think Marc was my first crush as well – which is funny because he’s such a pretty boy! Nowaday I like a rough looking lad haha.

45086_1399377825699_1249393_n

14 Years Old as the Godfather of Punk! Mr.Marc Bolan.

I recently went and saw “20th Century Boy” the Musical again. I totally recommend the show to everyone and anyone, fan or not! It wasn’t as historically accurate as the old script, but to hear Bolan’s music played in the style of a musical…… breath taking.
George Maguire did a fantastic job!

Right… in no particular order….

ONE INCH ROCK
“I got the horrors, cos I’m one inch tall”
This was the song I would sit and practice until my vibrato was on point! The intro is bloody fantastic; no one has a clue what he’s singing, but we all copy it don’t we.

BABY STRANGE
“In winds of passion, my whip is lashing”
This is actually my favourite song by Bolan. Lyrically, musically GENIUS! I feel like I’m 15 again when I hear this song – it’s a proper throw back track for me. This was the time I wanted to be a rockstar, I swear if you watch me dance at any gig I’m probably a mini Marc. I get far too excited over music; I just love it so much… friends will know, going anywhere with me is an embarrassment waiting to happen, because drunk, tipsy or sober, at some point in the evening or even daytime I will HAVE to dance…. and I can’t & wont stop! ❤

TRUCK ON TYKE
“People put you down cos you’re too low on the ground”
This was my ‘anti-bullying’ song. I got bullied A LOT for being so young, and being into a band like T.Rex; I got on better with my teachers than I did the kids.

LASER LOVE
“Lean clean woman lay a kiss on me”
Futuristic Dragon is one hell of an album. This is probably one of the more well known songs from that period.

SUNKEN RAGS
“It’s a shame how you unzip my winter poetry”
Such a gorgeous tune! How could one not include this.

LIFE’S A GAS
“I could’ve chained your heart to a star”
Some of you will know he did a duet with Cilla Black on the Cilla Black Show.

RAW RAMP
“Baby, you think your champ but girl, you ain’t nothing but a…”
I did get into Bolan via Dad as T.Rex is his favourite band. He gave me his record player from when he was my age, set it up in my room through a proper amplifier etc, and gave me the Electric Warrior album and this was the first song we listened to together. I used to play this one before school, and I used to turn the speed up on it to give it a bit more edge actually! Following into Electric Boogie, felt like a right rockstar 😉

BUICK MACKANE
“Rainy, Lady, Queen of the Rock”
I’m including this song, as Guns ‘n’ Roses did a blistering cover of this track from The Slider. For those Heavy Rock fans, thought this song might appeal to you as well as educate you. I love when people tell me that Guns ‘n’ Roses would never cover “a crap band like T.Rex”…… well sorry, but they did. Who do you think inspired your idols? It’s a full circle my loves.

DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD
“Exalted companion of cocaine nights”
After hearing this being performed as part of a musical, it just sends chills down my spine. It’s so emotional as a musical masterpiece. It was used as the scene for his funeral… I was in tears. So emotional!

20TH CENTURY BOY
“Well it’s plain to see, you were meant for me”.
Well we’ve got to include one commercial song haven’t we now! Now, if you want to know how to play this tune on guitar PROPERLY, then I am your girl. There is so much passion for music in this guy, it’s unreal. Nowadays people seem to lose the fun side of music, come on guys! I want to see that passion in people’s eyes when they love a song or an artists so much that you can feel that excitable energy just exuberate through them, and go into their own little world of joy… I love talking to people about music I love, without having to state facts. It’s better than having sex – like if a guy said “wanna come to mine and listen to a record?” I’M THERE! People start doing Podcasts or reviews and lose the passion… the world doesn’t run on facts. BE PASSIONATE!!!!

Sshh… I’m adding another cheeky tune

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MAGICAL MOON
“I’m gonna dance, with my princess”
Technically this is a Tyrannosaurus Rex song BUT you can’t be a Bolan lover and completely skip over his first records. Don’t forget his work in John’s Children either.

bd381d215c415a13709d10e7a2221b5b

You know what; Marc Bolan actually wrote so many amazing songs, he is such an underrated artist and often referred to the “teeny bopper” genre; but when you actually sit and properly listen and have respect from his musicianship – he was bloody brilliant! An absolute icon of his time. You know what? I’m gonna start listening to the Bolan again!

Don’t forget to find me on social media, please do reach out for whatever reason it may be, I am all ears! Keep your eyes peeled for the next Top 10 Songs by my Childhood bands; reckon it could get interesting.

JodieBowie : Create Your Own Rock Band

This idea just popped into my head, and I thought it would be a pretty cool blog topic. Play along as well of course!! Let’s see what kind of Rock Band I’d create 😉

First off, I think I’m going to go with a 5 piece – 2 guitarists, 1 frontman, 1 bassist, 1 drummer.

I’m also going to include people who are still alive and performing, as that sort of makes it more realistic. Can include any band, any genre, any popularity….. GO!

GUITAR 1
Ronnie Wood

ronnie-wood.png

Got to have Ronnie! He has the energy, the fun, the banter, the skills… he’ll fit right in. There has to be a legend among this line-up, and what greater legend than the man himself, the Rolling Stone!! I feel he’d be a delight to watch perform on stage, judging by my own experience of watching him. He’s also got such a passionate talent, and I love that when it shines through in musicians. I know for sure he could keep up with the youngsters, and maybe even teach them a thing or two! I personally love his personality, his image and most importantly his guitar sound – for that reason, he has to be in this band ❤

GUITAR 2
Kris Barras

5b1f81337a244

I could watch this dude play guitar for HOURS!! I’ve said so many times how talented he is, and for that reason he has to be in this band! Secondly, he’d be absolutely amazing at backing vocals, and I’m sure he could pull off some pretty epic solo’s with Ronnie Wood. I’m a huge fan of his guitar playing, it is so musically satisfying, his talent oozes out in every note he plays, and for me…. he’s captivating to watch as a musician. I think I’d share rhythm and lead duties between Barras and Wood, just because I adore both guitarists and want to hear both fully express their awesomeness.

BASSIST
Dougie Poynter

McFly-Dougie-Poynter-920x584

I think Dougie would fit in really well image wise, but he’s also an awesome live performer which is always important! Dougie can also sing backing vocals, so there should be some pretty sweet harmonies, one would hope. His energy would take this band to another level – if you haven’t seen him on stage…. he is FUCKING EPIC!! I’m a 100% positive he’d be able to work a crowd super hard, and would be a vital character when it comes to audience participation and boosting the energy in the room. He’d keep everyone on their toes, and work so well with the guitarists I’m sure.

DRUMMER
Kyle Hughes

maxresdefault

Another excellent choice image wise, in my opinion. He’s also a brilliant drummer, and I really enjoy watching him perform. He constantly looks like he’s having fun, and a good time, as well as expressing his passion – vital points to be a musician in this band. It’s good to know he is also capable of helping out on backing vocals; always helpful! I feel he has power, ambition and drive and would work amazingly with Dougie when it comes to the rhythm section of the band.

FRONTMAN
John Corabi

jonCorabi500 (1)

Absolutely 100% has to be fronted by John Corabi ❤ His voice is everything! Especially when it comes to rock ‘n’ roll. He can take any song and make it sound beautiful – that is something I love, adore and look for in vocalists. A voice that lets me fade away into a blissful tone of loveliness. I enjoy his stage presence, I think he’s got a wonderful rugged image, he can reach some incredible notes vocally, and he can also sing soft slow songs absolutely beautifully.

BAND NAME : LEGENDS!

10 Songs that HAVE to be on the setlist :
1. Sweet Emotions – Aerosmith

2. What Goes Around – Dead Daisies

3. Midnight Rambler – The Rolling Stones

4. Rockin’ In The Free World – Neil Young

5. Feel Like Makin’ Love – Bad Company

6. Mama Weer All Crazee Now – Slade

7. Paper Plane – Status Quo

8. Enter Sandman – Metallica

9. Ooh La La – The Faces

10. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

Oh my gosh – I friggin’ love this band I’ve created! Imagine if it was real – would be so damn epic!! I think visually and musically this would be a pretty great band. Got some awesome musicians in there, who give their upmost energy when it comes to performances, as well as them all being incredibly talented. ❤

SO! What did you think of my very own Rock Band? Any members a surprise to you? Good, bad? Let me know!! And have a go yourselves, I’d love to know what you’d come up with ❤

STORY:
It’s been my dream/ambition since I was very small to run my own festival, in May 2018 I decided it’s time to stop dreaming and make it happen. With a lot of forward planning, support and vision I’ve been able to go out there and put together something I thought would be impossible for someone of may age.
It’s taught me that you really do have to work hard for your dreams, but if you believe in yourself you will get there – no matter who or what stands in your way.

I guess you’re also wondering why I chose “NOZFEST” as the name? Well, quite a few people wanted me to call it “JodieFest” which… I just didn’t like. I could’ve called it “RockFest” to fit in with my Rock Nights.. but I felt that was too plain, boring and standard. Then I remembered, my nickname is “Noz” as my Dad could see up my nose when I was born and has pretty much called me that ever since. I think NozFest has quite a good ring to it as well.

The great thing about this festival is that I managed to include all the bands that you guys requested, and also some of my personal favourites!!
This isn’t just for me, this is festival is for YOU and it’s for the bands – it’s our time to join together and have a bloody good time, and share our love of music. For anyone who’s ever felt like a black sheep… NozFest is for you as well! ❤
I wanted to include local bands, bands from ‘a far’ and have a pretty epic headliner – and I think I’ve managed to have a pretty good mixture.

VOLUNTEERS & HELP:
I am looking and do need commited volunteers to help out with NozFest on the stage. I will need people on the door, wristbands, backstage, etc etc. Some experience with festivals and bands would be useful – but as long as you are reliable, work well as part of a team and don’t mind me working with you, then feel free to join the NozFest team!
If you are interested in Volunteering, please drop me a message via the NozFest website or alternately email me at : nozfest@yahoo.com

Band Chat : An Interview with Alice Atkinson

It’s time for another Band Chat! This time I have for you a very awesome female bass player who’s stage performances are one to be amazed by! Alice Atkinson of The Black Bullets!26733845_1577919992291458_2036034164879955549_n

The Black Bullets are a rock ‘n’ roll punk band from Basingstoke/London. The Black Bullets stage energy is something to be fascinated by. The band have already played many Hard Rock Hell shows, with more set for the future. Definitely a great addition to any line-up, that is for sure. I had the pleasure of booking a show with them about 2 years ago, and thought they were fantastic rock ‘n’ rollers going from strength to strength. Definitely a band to keep your eyes out for!

I’ve known of Alice for quite a while now, and I’ve always been fascinated by her stage performances! Not only does she take being a female in a hard rock band to a whole new level, but she makes bass players look like the coolest members of the band (which in all fairness, they usually are). If I was an aspiring young musician, Alice would fast become one of my idols for sure.

Alice Atkinson

What bands/musicians got you into rock ‘n’ roll and music?
I was raised on Queen and The Beatles but hilariously enough, it was actually McFly that made me realise I wanted to be in a band. I’d already been playing guitar since I was 6 but I’d never really considered it anything beyond a hobby. McFly came along, I saw them onstage and on tour and I thought “I want to do that.” Through McFly talking about their influences, I got into other bands like The Who and Bruce Springsteen, and it was also around that time that the noughties emo movement was taking off, so bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco were constants on my CD player.

I have a huge respect for the “classic rock and roll” bands because they were such huge influences on so many of mine but yeah, I can’t deny that the bands that really shaped me as a musician are about as far from the traditional definition of “rock and roll” as possible!

Have you always wanted to be a bass player?
Hilariously, no! As I said, I’ve been playing guitar since I was 6 and when I first started playing in bands, I was actually playing lead guitar. Unfortunately, I hit a point between bands where no matter how hard I looked, I just could not find anyone who wanted a female guitarist – literally, I had bands flat out telling me they didn’t want a girl. Apparently, you need a penis to play guitar. Who knew?!

However, one night, I saw an advert for a band who wanted a female bassist. I listened to their stuff and immediately knew I wanted to be part of it so I basically lied about EVERYTHING and said I was an expert bass player… and then in about the space of a week, desperately learnt the root notes for all of their songs. I figured that I definitely wasn’t going to get in on skill but I might be able to get in on enthusiasm. Much to my surprise, it worked and suddenly I found myself as the bassist for The Featherz and with a VERY sharp learning curve on how to actually play bass! I had arrogantly assumed that bass would be virtually the same as lead guitar minus 2 strings but it turned out to be an entirely different instrument and way of playing (shocker… I know…). Since then though, I’ve come to love playing bass and although I still do pick up my guitar occasionally, I definitely prefer the ol’ 4-strings!

How do you find being the only female in the band?
It doesn’t happen as much as it used to but when I first joined up with The Black Bullets, the first question I was normally asked was which member of the band was I dating. Me and Mr Billy Tee, my lead singer, have a running joke that I’m his band wife because of how many times that was assumed! I also had an incident where security of a venue almost didn’t let me in for soundcheck because they thought I was just hanging around with the band…

However, there is also a lovely side to being the only girl in the band (and often also the only girl on the entire line up), which is when after a show, women come up to me and say it’s inspiring to see a girl up there onstage, rocking out just as hard as the guys. It’s awesome to hear that I’m having a similar effect for other women as my own hero Lyn-Z Way (bassist for Mindless Self Indulgence) had on me.

In your opinion, do you think it’s harder for a female bassist to get recognised?
Yes and no. There’s lots of girls out there doing their damned hardest and they’re getting attention and recognised… but it’s not always because they’re actually damn good at what they do. It’s recognition but for the wrong reasons. There are definitely steps being taken in the right direction towards remedying this (there’s more and more women out there getting their voices and instruments heard) but we’re still a way from having a girl in the band immediately just being seen as “fellow musician” as opposed to “the token chick,” or even, god forbid, the worst of all – classifying “female-fronted band” as a whole genre by itself.

Do you have any advice for other female bass players looking to join a band?
Don’t take no for an answer! Get out there and show everyone what you’re made of! I’m pretty much the living proof that doing something is more important than how good you are at it – and hey, if you don’t know how to do something, you can always learn.

Also – and I cannot stress this one enough – do not tear down other female musicians just because you might perceive them as a “threat.” This scene is big enough for all of us so find your sisters and cheer them on! I’ve known a few girls with that bitchy, two-faced attitude and for every single one of them, they got exactly what they deserved – everyone eventually saw through their shit and all the lies they told were found out, and now, no one wants anything to do with them.

Your stage performance is very impressive! Do you ever rehearse/practice your moves?
Hoo boy, yeah, learning how to do backbends certainly took a fair few instances of Head-Meet–Floor before I got the hang of it!

If I see something that looks climeable, I will test it out before the gig. I learnt the hard way to do that – when I was in The Featherz, we were playing a gig at the old 12 Bar and there was a giant beam by the side of the stage that I thought would look really cool to climb up on. The last song of the set arrives, I chuck my bass to the side and take a running leap off the stage towards the beam where I landed and…

And it was then that I realised the flaw in my plan; my skirt was too tight for me to swing my leg up over it and I didn’t have the upper body-strength to pull myself up. The result was that I was kinda just left awkwardly hanging over this beam, all flailing legs and going “WHOOO YEAH ROCK AND ROLL THIS IS TOTALLY WHAT I MEANT TO DO!!!!”

Is there any upcoming/gig announcements for the Black Bullets coming up that we should look out for?
Yeah, we’ve got some pretty cool gigs coming up! We’re pretty much touring solidly for most of May. We’re also playing at Mammapalloza at The Unicorn in Camden on 12th May and also Alice’s Wicked Tea Party on 2nd June in Dorset, both of which have some really rad bands playing on the line up. You can check out the events page on our facebook for all our latest shows (https://www.facebook.com/TheBlackBulletsUK/ )

You were also bass player for The Featherz. How do the Black Bullets differ from your previous band?
Well, there’s a lot less glitter involved which my mum is thankful for! Have you ever accidentally put a red sock in with a white shirt in the washing? Glitter’s like that but worse. Oh, the amount of times that I’d accidentally mix my gig-clothes up with the normal laundry…

If you could play in any band, who would you choose?
Oooo, that’s a good question! I think it’d have to be My Chemical Romance (at least, in the happy hypothetical world where they didn’t break up… I don’t think my poor broken emo heart will ever get over that). I saw them live a few times and each time, there was something undeniably magical about the atmosphere. I would love to have been able to see what it was like from their side of the stage.

What is your favourite song to perform live and why?
I like Riding Shotgun because it’s the one where me and Billy jump out into the audience and have a bit of fun. We played one show where the security had given us very strict instructions that we WERE NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, TO GO IN THE AUDIENCE… so naturally, when the song started, off we went. I spotted the security hoisting Billy’s microphone cable above the audience, which I thought was a surprisingly helpful thing to do until I realised they were using it to literally reel him back in!

What has been your favourite show to date? With any band you have been in.
It’s gotta be Octoberfest in Basingstoke last year. It was in this giant tent that was completely packed out, the sound was great and the audience were completely welcoming. I had a lot of fun at that show!

Do you think image is important in a performance? If so, what do you love most about your own image?
I definitely do think that image is important. The one thing that pisses me off the most is when I see bands onstage who look like they haven’t made the slightest bit of effort and can’t really be bothered to be there. It always made me so mad because I’d be like “I would give ANYTHING to be standing where you are right now and you look like you’re dying of boredom.”

My belief is that you need an image to make people want to stare at the stage. I’m a total, unashamed geek and I like to sometimes sneak in costumes to what I wear on stage… I’ve got a Wizard of Oz look and Eleven from Stranger Things’ pink dress to name a few. I’ve got a pair of light-up unicorn trainers as well which get more attention than me! I like to dress up and have fun with what I wear on stage, and at the end of the day, I’m on stage to perform. It’s why I’m up there. I want to entertain the audience. I don’t think I could stand still even if I wanted to!

Name 3 bands you feel other people should also check out.
Screech Bats , Yur Mum and Vanity

When on stage, do you ever feel like you have to be sexualised because you are a female? If so, how do you deal with this?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate in the sense that most people I encounter are incredibly respectful towards me and there’s never been any pressure in the Bullets that I have to play up to any specific expectations. I don’t think what I’m doing can be particularly sexualised either because I’m basically hyped up on Red Bull, flailing around and getting all gross and sweaty and out of breath because I’m the unfittest motherfucker on the planet. I don’t like wearing anything particularly revealing and I always wear shorts under my skirts because I don’t want to flash the audience! That said, although I personally don’t chose to, if a woman wants to use her sexuality to market herself, then fair-fucking-play to her. It’s her choice to do so and all the more respect to her for doing it on her own terms. For me though, it’s just not who I am and I’m much happier staying true to myself than trying to fit into someone’s idea of what I should be.

JodieBowie : Bands and Moods!

I don’t know about ya’ll but I listen to certain bands/songs depending on what mood I’m in. I thought this might be an interesting topic, and maybe you’ll discover some new music! That is of course always my aim. Music is a powerful thing, it definitely is in my life anyway.

untitled-6.jpg

BAD ASS
When I wanna feel like an absolute bad ass, that I can achieve anything in this world and that I am seriously feckin’ cool – I reach out for Western Sand, Mason Hill, Kris Barras, Kid Rock; bands with really epic riffs and guitar solos. The sort of bands you just HAVE to head bang to and unleash your inner rock chick. I’m sure everyone has that band that brings them out of their shell. I head-bang so hard to those bands, that I get really bad neck-ache, and do the same thing all over again the next day!

REBELLING
I’ve only really just noticed this, which is mostly what has inspired this blog. Whenever I am meeting up with my Mum’s side of the family, I ALWAYS start listening to Steel Panther. I have a feeling it’s because of the whole image that they create, they are heavily about sex, rude language, they look like bad influences, they act like bad influences, they sing about drugs… they are the sort of band that you worry about your innocent daughter going to see. With that side of the family, I have always felt like the black sheep. I dress very different, my life-style is not accepted, I’m sort of ‘expected’ to be permanently drunk (you know, like us rockers always are *rolls eyes*) – and Steel Panther sort of give me this confidence to be “fuck you, this is me, I don’t care if you don’t like it” attitude, otherwise I’d probably just sit there and cry around them. When I would stay at my Nans I’d always take a photo of Steel Panther with me, and it would calm me down. In a way, I guess bands feel more like family to me…. that’s how powerful music really is! I feel like a lot of us ‘rejects’ rely on music and bands to make us feel human again.

LONG JOURNEYS
For those long journeys, I really like just listening to one band with lots and lots of songs. The sort of bands where you can look out the window, watch the world pass by and lose yourself in your imagination. Massive Wagons and Beth Blade and The Beautiful Disasters are two bands I love listening to on long journeys. I recently played some Beth Blade whilst on the way to visit my Nan in Ascot with my Dad, and we found a song for pretty much every mood so we were well happy! If you can get my Dad dancing whilst driving, or singing a-long… TRUST ME, you’re a bloody good band haha.
I often stick Massive Wagons on when I’m going for a walk, or The Treatment and Those Damn Crows.. they are a great band to listen to whilst on the way to work; they give me the “you can do it” attitude.

DRUNK
I listen to all kinds of music and bands when I’m hammered. It’s usually a variety of songs rather than bands in all honesty. It’s usually all those cheesy classics that you HAVE to dance to. For example :
Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll, Footloose, Proud Mary, Play That Funky Music, Welcome To The Jungle, Place Your Hands, Here I Go Again, Green Onions, Burning Love, Edge of Seventeen, Hey Baby, Superstition, Don’t Feel Like Dancing, Morning Glory……. you get the idea.
I am a huge dancer! If there’s a song I like being played anywhere… I WILL dance to it… sober, drunk, at home or in public. These are just some of the best tunes to cover the entire dance floor with… and believe me I do.
If I’m having a proper rocking out session, I always start with “Stop, Stop!” they are the best band to get a party started with, I work my way through all 3 albums before moving on to the cheesy classics 😛
*Fun Fact : I’ve been sober for 4 months now, but you still can’t beat these tunes!

Chris Payn

RELAXED
If you follow me on Instagram, you probably will have seen that I am mostly at a Chris Payn gig somewhere. Let’s hope he don’t read this or it’ll probably weird him out hahaha.
I usually go to his shows rather spontaneously, but it’s usually when I need to just sit and zone out for a good while. I always come home feeling refreshed, and reminded why I do what I do and I get so many new ideas – I guess I get inspired. I’ve taken a few friends to see him, and honestly, I think it’s better than going to see a full rock band because you can sit and listen, have a drink, have a chat, have a dance, sing-a-long, and the atmosphere is so much calmer than a bunch of people jumping up and down, pushing people out the way, screaming in your ear…. maybe I’m just getting old!!!
I also listen to a lot of Paul Weller when I feel like I need a breath of fresh air. His voice is so smooth and soothing, it just melts all my worries away. He is so yummy to look at as well, I can’t help but just fade away thinking about how incredibly talented he is. Weller is for sure my favourite musician hands down ❤

SAD
I’m not entirely sure what I reach out for when I’m down. I mean, I guess there are specific song such as “Poster Girl for Pain” or “Angel with a Dirty Face” by Beth Blade… or most of the songs by The Wilderpeople. I think Suede is a band I reach out for when I am really low. They’ve always been there to catch me when life is not good. Songs that genuinely make me cry are “Wild Ones” and “Stay Together”; I mean proper tears as well. Especially Wild Ones, that is an absolutely beautiful song, musically, vocally, lyrically.. man, makes me well up just thinking about it.

EXCITED
If I feel super excited about something, or I feel like I’m really achieving something, I often play The Dead Daisies. I think it’s because in my little head and heart, that is the direction I want to go. I want to be working with bands like them, and putting on the shows they do etc. That would be absolutely fantastic in my head. I absolutely love John Corabi, and I guess he sort of helps the fire in my belly to keep burning – what with his amazing stage presence and incredible vocals… can’t really beat that ultimate rockstar attitude can you. Makes my heart beat faster and makes me want to keep aiming for my dreams!!

Bowieee 038

SEXY
Come on, we all have certain songs that turn us into a sex goddess! Mine just happens to be Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown.
If I’m needing an extra alter-ego boost… the Rocky Horror soundtrack never fails to make me feel my absolute unbreakable best!!
If I’m still awake in the early hours of the morning, I am probably dressed up as Dr.Frank ‘n’ Furter strutting my stuff or in my underwear pretending I’m some sort of Shania Twain, with really sexy long hair and a much more attractive face haha.

SINGING
Most of you probably don’t know, but I absolutely love singing. I can’t say I’m very good at it, but I do get great enjoyment out of it. I usually warm up with Mason Hill, I always get impressed when I can get through a Mason Hill song… they also make me feel like a bad ass rock star, so it’s always good to get the confidence and energy going. I usually delve into some Marco Mendoza, his songs are great to sing-a-long to, I usually go for “You Got Me”, “I Want You”, “Live For Tomorrow” and “Lettin’ Go”. Of course I do the standard bit of Bowie, The Stones, Queen, Guns n Roses – then if I want to prove to myself I genuinely have some talent, I move on to the T.Rex, Gretchen Wilson, McFly, Paul Weller … I wish I could say I can do a good Quatro, but that would be fibbing, I can’t even attempt the Suzi!
